Artist story
Hani Hourani
A photograph of the artist Hani Hourani while painting his artwork “The Apple Seller,” dating back to 1966.
Biography
His artistic career was disrupted in 1967, when he decided to pursue a more political and cultural line. In 1993, Hourani emphasized his specialty by resuming his works and holding an exhibition featuring watercolor paintings, where he focused on capturing natural landscape views of Al-Waleh Valley, south of Amman. Hourani’s contribution is also recognizable in photography. as he grasps the surface of the object as well as the texture, giving a sense of abstraction. But that didn’t stop him from working on masses and faces from around the globe to capture moments of reflection, interaction and unique expressions in various settings.
Journey
Six decades of sustained looking
Hani enjoys experimenting with diverse subjects, capturing his love for old Amman neighborhoods and scenery in his collection of oil and acrylic painting series titled “Faces of my City” where he inserts vibrant colors into panoramic and scenic views of the city visualizing very fine details lying in facades, streets, and walls, whilst examining how their colors and surfaces have transformed over time. His most recent exhibition celebrated the beauty of pomegranates, which hold a sacred and spiritual significance for many cultures around the world in his exhibition “Fruit of Heaven” showcasing them in various forms in oil and acrylic.
Exhibitions
Shown at home and abroad
Over six decades, Hourani's work has been shown in Amman and far beyond it — from the “Doors” photography exhibition at Göteborg's Konsthall in Sweden to “Faces of My City”, his series on old Amman, and “Fruit of Heaven”, his paintings of pomegranates. Each exhibition has its own page, with photographs from the show.

Visual language
Restraint as method.
His work is characterised by restraint and precision. He rarely uses artificial light, preferring the natural light of early morning or dusk. The palette trends toward the monochromatic — limestone greys, dust whites, the amber of afternoon stone. Colour, when it appears, is incidental rather than sought.

Said about him
“He draws a city the way someone remembers it, not the way a camera sees it.”
